GRAPHIC ARTS CONTESTS

Cartoon and Digital Imagery

Cartoon
An original cartoon, either a single panel or a strip, with a classical theme, not necessarily the Convention theme.      BEWARE OF PLAGIARISM! Do not simply borrow an idea from a cartoon you have seen. If you use published cartoon characters, be sure to use an original idea. Any entry which any judge feels is plagiarized may be disqualified by the Second Vice President and State Chair. Please be original.

Four copies of the entry should be submitted along with one pre-Convention contest registration form found in the Convention registration packet. The title only may appear at the top of each copy of the entry. Maximum size is 3"x8" for a cartoon strip and 4"x6" for a cartoon panel. Entries which do not follow this limit are not eligible to be judged and will not be accepted. The cartoons become the sole property of the OJCL and cannot be returned. If there are at least 30 entries, the contest will be divided into upper and lower levels at an appropriate point. The winning cartoon(s) will be published in the Torch.

Digital Imagery

Computer Enhanced Photography shall be submitted online at the following web page:
http://ohiojcl.org/conv/cephoto.htm

Computer-enhanced photography differs from traditional photography in that it involves modifications to a photograph via computer. This may include changing the color, changing the background, superimposing one photo over another, adding distortions or shadows, etc. via a computer. Entrants must describe the enhancement process on one 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper (or hard copy of form created via the online entry system). For instance, you should describe any filtering (e.g. gamma correction), cropping, or resizing. You must also state the name of the software package used to modify the photo. You may use original photos or photos from existing sources, but this must be documented (title of work or website address, name of original photographer if available).
The final product shall be submitted in hard copy form and electronically; the registration form will go with the hard copy, along with the one page description and any necessary documentation. The electronic submission may be made by email or on a CD, 3.5" diskette, or 100 MB ZIP disk. Electronic files shall not exceed 2 MB, and the resolution shall not exceed 300 dpi. Files shall only be submitted in the following formats: .jpg., .gif, and .png. No animations are permitted.
Entries for this contest may only be submitted during the period of time stated in the Convention Registration Packet and the OhioJCL web site. Late entries will not be judged.

NB: These rules differ from the rules for the National Convention contest. If you would like to use your project for both, please consult the NJCL Contest Rules to make sure your project is in compliance. For instance, at the national level, only original photos are permitted.

The reason we are allowing the use of non-original photos is to allow students who have excellent computer imaging skills but little photography skill to compete. Again remember that this differs significantly from the Nationals rules and should be kept in mind if a student wishes to use their project for both Conventions.
