2.  Odyssey Project:  Illustrated Children’s Book

 

Checklist/Rules for Illustrated Children’s Book Project

 

1. The  project must have a sturdy cover (front and back) which is decorated in the theme of the story.  You may purchase a pre-made book/scrapbook type book but you will still need to decorate it.  Don't buy something that can't be decorated.   

[*For state & national conventions, covers should be hand-done.  (See Mrs. Ashcraft for more details).]

 

2. The maximum size of the book is 10" x 12".

 

3. The story will be in English, although some Latin may be used.  Student must provide translations for any Latin used.

 

4. At least 10 ‘details from the episode’ must be represented within the book.  With prior permission, student may include other episodes.

 

5. Each page must contain visual elements as well as text.  These elements must be colorful and interesting. 

 

6. Care must be taken not to have misspelled words or incorrect grammar.  Student should run the entire text through spell/grammar check before printing it in the book. 

 

7. Text should be hand-lettered directly into the book, AFTER SPELL AND GRAMMAR CHECK!!!

 

8. Images from the internet/copies from books are not allowed.  Work must be student’s own.

 

9. Images/pictures may be drawn, painted, created from construction paper, etc., as long as it is done neatly.  Don't use pastels/charcoals; they will smear. 

 

10.  The book must consist of at least 20 decorated pages.  Pages must be numbered, 1-20.  Student may choose to cover 10 pages front AND back OR 20 pages, fronts only.  If items are being glued in then the fronts only approach may be sturdier. 

 

11. Creativity is necessary for this project to be successful! 

 

12.  Caveat:  BEWARE OF PLAGIARISM!  This means that you cannot just adapt a story that someone else wrote.  It must be your own story. 

  

Types of Children's Books Include:  Comic Book; ABC Book; Story Book; a Pop-up book

 

Teachers will also use the following four criteria to grade projects:   

 

-neatness/clarity                                -ability to tell the story visually

          -artistic merit & presentation                     -creativity/originality
