Checklist/Rules for Mosaic Project:
*Parent/Student Warning:
This choice is very time-consuming, especially bead mosaics, and
requires a purchase that can become very costly!
FOLLOW THE
GUIDELINES BELOW WHEN PREPARING YOUR PROJECT!!!
1. at least
3 details from episode must be included in the central image of the mosaic
(people/objects/events)
2. abstract
designs/patterns can be used for borders/framing, not as central image
3. base must
not be bendable in any way - use wood or strong plastic; do not use poster
board or
foam poster board
4. materials
for this project will require a purchase – PROBABLY A MINIMUM OF $50, Make
sure not to buy lots of tiny containers of beads in many colors. They are
really expensive that way. It is best to choose colors that are less
expensive and can be purchased in larger sizes.
5.
ceramic/glass/plastic/wooden tiles or beads must be used - no food, seeds,
beans, pasta are permitted
6. at least 5
different colors of tiles/beads must be used to create overall picture
7. FOR
BEAD MOSAICS: beads must be attached FIRMLY to base. There are only
two methods of gluing that we have found to be successful. 1. the Mod
Podge method OR 2. by ‘double stick craft tape’ (the kind with orange
cellophane which is peeled off - YOU CAN SEE THROUGH IT) - points will be
deducted for lost tiles/beads. Teachers will be happy to describe the
process to students if they ask.
8. FOR
TILE MOSAICS: grout must be used to fill in spaces between
tiles. The smaller the pieces of tile, the better detail you can achieve.
Caveat: it is impossible to clean the grout off of unfired, rough tiles –
glazed tiles work better with grout. You can also buy larger tiles and
break them up with a hammer (put them in a freezer bag first).
9. must be
at least 1 square foot but no more than 5 square feet in size.
10. completed
mosaic must create easily recognizable picture which pertains directly to
the episode.
11. surface
of the mosaic should be flat and smooth, not jagged, bumpy or 3D
Teachers will also use the following four
criteria to grade projects:
-neatness/clarity -ability to tell the
story visually
-artistic merit & presentation -creativity/originality
