Spelling and Vocabulary Workshop
Second Trimester: Vocabulary Workshop During the coming weeks, the children will be working in Vocabulary Workshop. It serves as a vehicle, not only for vocabulary building, but at the third grade level, an introduction to learning how one studies. Over the course of the trimester your student will come home with various strategies to use so that each child can find his/her own most effective way to study. There is a Vocabulary Workshop/QUIA games link on this web site. This link contains games for the vocabulary in each chapter and, hopefully, makes study more enjoyable. The publisher also provides games to assist in learning. That web site is www.sadlier-oxford.com. To use the publisher's site you must remember that your student is working in Level Green.
First Trimester: The children have both a Spelling and a Vocabulary Workshop book. Each text is divided into units comprised of approximately 5 chapters. I will alternate between units in both books switching books when a unit has been completed. We will begin the quarter with Spelling. On Monday, I will review the phonetic elements represented in the spelling list. Tuesday's work will focus on a pre-test of the words for the week. Each student will come home on Tuesday with her/his own individual list words recorded in his/her homework planner. The spelling test will take place on Friday. To help prepare for the Friday test, I strongly recommend that the children use the strategy for studying Spelling words located on Page 11 of the Spelling book. When we switch to Vocabulary Workshop, the vocabulary for each chapter will be presented in class, usually on Monday and Tuesday. Parts of the chapter will be assigned for homework. The end of the chapter test will usually be given on Friday. There is a Vocabulary Workshop/QUIA games link on this web site. This link contains games for the vocabulary in each chapter and, hopefully, makes study more enjoyable. The publisher also provides games to assist in learning. By the end of the trimester, the children will be writing paragraphs. The students will first be introduced to the importance of a topic sentence. This first sentence tells the subject (who the paragraph is about ) and the focus (what the entire paragraph will be about). Students will learn that when writers select a subject and a focus for their paragraphs, they are making a promise to their readers and when they stick to the "topic sentence promise", a well constructed paragraph is the usual result.
