Second Trimester

During the  second trimester addition with renaming, subtraction with regrouping, time, and standard measurement will be among the topics covered.

 

Addition with Renaming

As adults we perform math computation so automatically that 76 plus 76 equaling 152 is no big deal.  But for a child, understanding the how and why of the process can be quite complex. 

You are all aware, and some of you painfully aware, that  in second grade a good deal of time was spent working on the addition and subtraction facts through 18.  The goal in that endeavor was to arrive at the introduction of renaming in addition and subtraction with math facts already mastered.  There are only two kinds of errors a child usually makes when renaming.  The first is with math facts and the second is in the renaming process.  

Subtraction With Regrouping

The most common pitfall here is the desire to make subtraction commutative, and while multiplication and addition share the commutative property, subtraction does not. 

Children know that they can say 8 plus 4 equals 12, or 4 plus 8 equals 12. Therefore, they have a hard time not going on automatic pilot and saying 4 minus 8 equals 4.  Be ready to hear the math chant designed to assist the children in remembering how the process works: "BOTTOM BIGGER, BETTER BORROW."  (The chant is really a Patti Kenney original.  However, I have her permission to share it with your children.)

 

During the first trimester of third grade the children will be concentrating on:

  •    Place value 

  •   Data and Graphing

 

The Importance of Place Value

Our orientation for reading numbers or text is left to right, so for some students beginning a math problem at the far right of a number, in the one's place, seems awkward.  Furthermore, the children must understand that each place can effect the value of the digit in that place, as well as understanding that ten ones can be traded for one ten, etc. 

The children's experiences with Montessori material and other manipulatives assist them to internalize this process. I will begin the year by using Golden Bead material and the positive snake game
