Kinds of Sentences

Statement - states a fact or opinion.  These are telling sentences.

Punctuation = period

My class has 14 students.

It is a beautiful day to fly a kite.

Questions - asks a question

Punctuation = question marks

Why are the aliens dancing with a butterfly?  

     

Command - makes a command or request

Punctuation = period, sometimes exclamation mark

Don't forget to eat your broccoli.

No running in the hall! 

Exclamation - excited sentences that show surprise or big emotion.

Punctuation = exclamation mark

Wow, that's the biggest taco ever!

Nouns

A noun is a word which names a person, place, thing, or idea

Kinds of nouns

Common The general name of a person, place, thing or idea. 

student  house  turtle

Proper The specific name of a person, place, thing, or idea.  Proper nouns are always capitalized.   Buddy   Harry Potter

McDonald's Corporation restaurant

Concrete These nouns name things that can be touched or seen.

hamburger    flowers    carpets

Abstract These nouns name things that cannot be touched or seen.

love   happiness  anger

Possessive These nouns are used to show possession or ownership.

man's smile   Rudolph's red nose

Collective These nouns are a collection of things that act together as a group.

A bunch of bananas   A school of fish

Compound  These nouns have two or more words.  They are written as one word, separate words, or words with hyphens.

backpack  yo-yo

Singular  Singular nouns name one item.

cat        chair

Plural  Plural nouns name more than one item.

    

    mice     butterflies

 

Pronouns

We are now studying pronouns.  Pronouns are words that take the place of a noun.

Examples:

Pronoun Subject He ate pizza for dinner.
Object The stylist gave him a spiked haircut.
Possessive The purple sweatshirt is yours.
Reflexive Sally did the entire project herself.
Possessive Adjective The teacher collected our homework.
Demonstrative         This is a snickerdoodle.
Indefinite              Somebody will do the work.
