There are also numerous weblinks to sources in our Blackboard site, just logon to Blackboard to this course and click on Websites.  Remember that the web can often be a goldmine for primary sources as long as you are careful, but it is extremely hard to find a real scholarly secondary source just sitting on a website. For those you must search in databases like JSTOR and others we will discuss in class and you must go to the library.

Students will learn valuable time management skills, research skills, critical thinking skills, critical reading skills, and analytical writing skills through this project.

Students should be aware that these research papers can be used as part of their college admission portfolio through the use of the National Writing Board.  For a fee, this group rates history based research papers on a scale of 1-6 using an international standard developed at The Concord Review.  The fee covers sending on your score to 3 colleges of your choice.  Of course, if you do not like your score you do not have to have it sent on since they notify the students first.  Many schools are now encouraging students to utilize this service as a way of setting yourself apart from other applicants and proving your abilities in research and writing.  Papers submitted to this service must be completely the work of the student.  Therefore, students who have tutors working with them on the research paper will probably not be able to submit.

Students who write truly exceptional papers can also submit their papers to The Concord Review.  This scholarly journal, the only one of its kind, publishes the work of high school students in the field of history.  The competition is tough, but nothing looks better on a college resume than having been published.  Two Summit Students have had their Summit Sophomore History papers published.   The minimum word requirement for submission to this journal is 4000 words which is approximately 15 pages double spaced.  Students are encouraged to go to their website and look at previous published articles to get a sense of what level of work is required for publication.
