What do we mean by social justice?

"Minimum material resources are an absolute necessity for human life. If persons are to be recognized as members of the human community, then the community has an obligation to help fulfill basic needs unless an absolute scarcity of resources makes this strictly impossible. No such scarcity exists in the United States today.  Social justice implies that persons have an obligation to be active and productive participants in the life of society and that society has a duty to enable them to participate in this way."  Economic Justice for All (#68-#71)

SCD's senior social justice class is a culminating experience that allows students to move from life experiences, religious studies and community service work to a place of understanding how interconnected all of life is and how each of us has rights and duties as the result of that interconnectivity.

This is accomplished through the students active participation in classroom discussions, service site practicums and serious personal reflections.
