As a teacher of Religion my job is to provide an environment in which each student can achieve a quality understanding of the material.  This is achieved when students experience the material as being useful to them, can understand the concepts and can apply them to their own lives.

 COURSE OBJECTIVE

The objective of this course is to consider how the Gospel’s call to do good and avoid evil benefits us and our community.

 ASSESSMENT PROGRAM

It is my belief that students do work at three levels.  They either do work that does not meet the requirements, work that meets the requirements or work that goes above and beyond the requirements.  At the beginning of each Semester, each student will have an A+ recorded in the grade book.  If you wish to maintain this grade, your work in the following areas will need to be of quality:  Individual and Group work, Quizzes, Homework, Exams and Major study sections.  NOTE: There are two areas of work that all students must complete to get a grade in this class - two exams and all major study sections.  Any quizzes or individual / group work not turned in by the end of the grading period will be recorded as a "0".  All late assignments receive a 25% deduction (the ONLY reason for this is that assignments are needed on due dates for discussion and evaluation). All written work done outside of class must be turned in typed.  All typed work must be done in 12-point font, double-spaced using no larger than 1.0”  margins.  Quality work also requires the use of correct spelling and grammar.

SCHEDULE of Assignments

Homework:  As assigned in class

Quizzes:  All quizzes will be unscheduled

Sections of Major Study: As noted on www.summitcds.org/johnson

Exams:             First Semester

                                    Second Semester

Completed Major Study:  Due on or before the Second Semester exam

CLASS MATERIALS / TEXT

The primary resource for this class will be each one of you.

The primary text for this class will be the Catholic Social Teaching book.

RESPECT

Respect is of utmost importance to me.  Our faith is nothing if it is not put into action by the way we relate to each other and to the world.  These relationships must be rooted in love and integrity.

Because of this, I understand that students will do their own work.  Doing your own work means that you will not plagiarize (copy anyone's work whether a fellow student, an author of a book or article or information off of the internet without giving credit to the author).  I understand that each one of you will site the sources for your material and that cheating on tests, quizzes and homework will not be an issue.

I further understand that while this class will be an opportunity for discussion of issues that are packed with emotion, each person will be treated with dignity and honor.  Issues will be attacked not personal character.

     Class Participation and Group Work

Ø      Points will be assigned individually to everyone present in class that day.

Ø      Students will have the opportunity to give input into the participation/group work grading process.

Homework

Ø      Read assigned readings.

Ø      Answer Reflection Question: Put your name and date on the top of your reflection page.  State the reflection question.  State your response (in the first person) - response must be at least 100 words.

Ø      Take notes or outline the sections assigned for homework (optional).

Quizzes

Ø      Quizzes will be unannounced.

Ø      All of the quizzes will deal directly with material from the previous class period’s work or the previous night’s homework (please take note: these quizzes will greatly affect your grade in this class).

Ø      Students will be allowed to use their handwritten notes or outlines on quizzes (these are to be turned in with the quiz).

Major Study

Ø      You will find the outline and due dates for your major study sections at www.summitcds.org/johnson.

Ø      Each section of the study will be turned in and recorded as a quiz grade (each student will be expected to participate in the grading process).

Ø      The final copy should be turned in and will be graded holding the weight of an exam grade (again, each student will be expected to participate in the grading process).

Community Service Work

Ø      All students are expected to participate in community service work with the agency they have selected.

Ø      Students are responsible for informing the agency of their volunteer schedule at least three weeks ahead of time.

Ø      Students are responsible for following the rules of the school and of the agency while at the work site (if the rules of the school differ from the rules of the agency, school rules should be followed).

Ø      Students will car-pool to and from work sites.

Ø      Students will be at the work site for the entire 60 minutes of service.

Ø      Students will not be given passes to arrive late to any classes.

Ø      Attendance will be taken at the work site.  If you arrive late to a work site it will be counted as a school tardy.

Exams

Ø      I do not try to trick students on exams!  The purpose of an exam is to assess to what extent the student comprehends the material.  My hope is that every student does their best and achieves a grade which reflects that.

Ø      You will receive review sheets prior to each exam.  Every question on the exam will come from the review sheet (not every question on the review sheet will be on the exam).

Ø       Every student will take the first semester exam.
