Home afternoon classes Books to enjoy some math facts fun Some reading tips schedule

Welcome to Mrs. Johnson's Class

HAPPY SUMMER!

Math

Our math program is a wonderful compilation of many different approaches.

It is essential that the children learn and understand the concept of addition and subtraction.  The children need this foundation to learn and understand many other math concepts.  As the year progresses, we will be learning and reviewing addition and subtraction facts through twelve.

We incorporate the use of some Montessori materials to teach some very important skills.   We continue the work done in previous years by exploring numbers into the thousands.  We learn to add, subtract, even multiply and divide.

The five strands of teaching mathematics are emphasized through our "PROBLEM OF THE DAY"  and our "UNIT BOOKS".  The strands include number sense, measurement, geometry, data analysis and algebra.

We also put a large emphasis on problem solving skills.  This program teaches the children how to read and solve story problem through a variety of strategies.

The children create many of their own class math books writing story problems.  They learn to use correct math vocabulary and they love seeing their name in print for all to read and solve.

Further, the children will be keeping their own math journals.  This gives me insight into how they are thinking mathematically.

If you are looking for some extra math practice at home we use two good websites:

www.funbrain.com and www.aaamath.com

Our math book has an excellent website, www.pearsonsfsuccessnet.com .  The children will have passwords and will be able to complete some assignments online.

Keep practicing your facts this summer!  You should be able to add and subtract to twelve with confidence!  Get ready for second grade and practice all the way to 18!

Reading

I hope you find lots of opportunities to read good books this summer!

Language Arts

You have several journal entries as part of your summer work.  I am looking for correct spelling, good sentences and of course interesting adventures!
Homework

HOMEWORK

I am expecting homework to take around 15 - 20 minutes each evening. It is an extension of what we are doing in first grade each day. Each week there will usually be a reading assignment, a spelling assignments, a math assignment and a writing assignment. Here are a couple of tips and expectations:

bullet The homework sheet comes home every Monday and is to be returned every Friday unless otherwise noted.
bullet Pick a special place at home to keep the homework sheet .
bullet Take time each night to do homework. I don’t encourage children to do it all in one night. I would like them to get into the habit of having some "homework time" each night.
bullet The children should complete the homework neatly and in pencil.
bullet It would be helpful if an adult would check over their work to be sure it is accurate.
bullet It is the responsibility of your child to get the homework sheet back to me on Friday morning.
