I thought some reading tips might be helpful for reading with your child. Try to read for a short time every night. You cannot believe how many new vocabulary words your child will pick up by reading and reading and reading some more. Choose a book where your child can read most of the words. If your child comes to an unknown word don't take too much time trying to sound it out or figure it out. It's okay to tell them the word. For beginning readers, find books with more of a controlled vocabulary and where you see a lot of repetition. For beginning readers, read a page and have them read the same page. Use your finger or a bookmark to keep your place. While you are reading, stop and ask questions: What do you think will happen next? Why did that just happen? What do you think about that character? Do you understand what that means? Sometimes, just have a night where you read to them! Remember,
reading is supposed to be an enjoyable, fun activity! |
