The main component  of our second grade reading program consists of the study of various authors.  Within these studies the students increase their reading comprehension skills, phonetic skills, word attack skills, and their love of reading.  Our first author studied is Tomie dePaolo followed by Marc Brown and then Jan Brett. We also include units on biographies, mysteries, and fairy tales.  We conclude with a desert unit.

A separate phonics program is also taught daily in second grade.  Also, a separate spelling program is used in which weekly spelling words are introduced.  These spelling words are high frequency words and are to be spelled correctly in all daily writing.

The students in second grade also develop and refine their writing skills.  Many compositions, journal entries, and writing projects are completed.
