The Summit Country Day School
  Thursday, January 22, 2004

Parents will be receiving a letter from Joseph Devlin, Head of School, and Mark Bodnar, Chairman, Board of Trustees, within the next couple of days. This website was updated after that letter was mailed. This is the most current and up-to-date information. Here’s what we know.

Classes for Montessori, Primary and Middle School will resume on Wednesday, January 28th. Upper School classes will resume on Tuesday, January 27th. We are disappointed we must extend the time the classes are cancelled, but we believe this is necessary for the safety of our students, faculty and staff.

We are beginning the clean up of the damaged portion of the east wing. In respect for our neighbors, please do not drive on Convent Lane, Grandin Farm Lane or any of the surrounding streets. The campus is closed and we must ask you for your safety and the safety of those working on the building to not visit the campus until we have an “all clear” signal from our engineers. The clean up work is delicate and is moving slowly so as to minimize impact on the east wing. Therefore, we are extending the time classes are cancelled.

The building is a sturdy, solid structure, according to our experts. And the engineers believe clean up will not impact the remainder of the main building – but we want to be sure before we return students and staff to campus.

We want our students to return to their classes as soon as possible and we know the cancellation has caused inconvenience for families. We appreciate your understanding, patience and support.

When we resume classes on Wednesday, we will have two programs off-campus: Upper School and Montessori.

Here is the information we know as of today. As we learn more, we will let you know:

Montessori - We have finalized an off-campus location at Crossroads Church at Madison and Ridge Roads that we will use for the remainder of the school year.

Primary - Grades 1 & 2 will return to Holmes Hall. Grade 3 will be on campus in modular classrooms, so they can remain connected to the other students in grades 1 – 8.

Middle School - Grades 4 – 8 will return to the Harold C. Schott Middle School on campus.

Upper School - We are finalizing an off-campus location for our senior high.

Athletics - We are working on continuing our sports program. More information will be available on this web page.

Buses - No information at this time. Please plan on transporting your student until further information is available. We are working on this with the numerous providers that serve our students.

Lunch – We are making arrangements for lunch service at all locations effective Wednesday.

After School Care – After-school care should commence Wednesday.

Make-Up Days - The State allows schools 5 “snow” days that do not need to be made up. We are evaluating the alternatives on how to make up the additional day classes were cancelled.

How Can I Help?

Many parents have reached out and offered to help. Our Summit community is a caring, generous, strong network of parents, friends, and alumni. Here are some ideas:

Reach out to families with dual working parents and offer help for Monday and Tuesday of next week and after school care.

E-mail your division head with offers of assistance, including what you can do and the times you are available. As we resume classes, they will know the needs of teachers and students.

Help to organize car pools. The temporary loss of bus service will be a challenge, especially for working families.

E-mail Gina Kirk at kirk_g@summitcds.org with your offer of assistance. She is coordinating with Mr. Joseph Devlin and the school leadership.

Please attend the Summit Prayer Service on Saturday, January 24th at 9:30 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Kemper Road in Montgomery. This will be an opportunity for all of us to come together as a community to give thanks for our safety and to strengthen our spirit to meet the challenges ahead.
