Piano and Violin

Research shows that playing a musical instrument is advantageous to developing the brain. Music is the first and universal language of mankind. Learning to play piano or violin, which develops the coordination of hands, eyes and ears, can be the beginning of an active lifetime hobby.

The Summit Country Day School offers individual instruction in violin and piano to students during the school day. Lessons are offered to students in Kindergarten through grade 12. Lessons are 40 minutes per week.  Each piano student in Kindergarten and grades 1-3 receives his or her lesson in two parts on two separate days.

In December, piano and violin students play for one another at holiday celebrations. In the spring, students perform in recitals, which classmates, families and friends attend. There are additional in school and out-of-school performance opportunities.

Teaching is individualized to suit each student with the emphasis on proper technique, reading of music, musical interpretation and the enjoyment of making music. Upper School students receive 1/4 credit for each year of piano or violin study.

The fee for lessons includes music books that each student receives.
