Class Activities
, Reading -We shall move on to our next reader which is Wishes. We shall read dog stories. One group is exploring The Cricket on Times Square Some titles we shall read include: Pet Show, Harry and the Dirty Dog, Harry By the Sea, and Clifford Takes a Trip. Our writing assignments correlate closely with what they are reading.
Phonics - We shall review short vowels and long vowels. The students will be applying short vowels to their writing activities. We shall make a booklet with all of our short and long vowel work. Some examples include: cat, hat, that, mat, and bad. We shall begin our unit on long vowels and continuing working on consonant blends.
Writing- During writing each student will learn story structure, editing skills, and phonic skills. We shall be doing writing workshop three times a week. The students will do a rough draft and then submit a final draft for their good copy. We shall be writing Thanksgiving stories and frog stories. Language - We shall be working on specific skills related to capitalization and punctuation. Special emphasis will be placed on the recognition of contractions, rhyming words, opposites, compound words and sequencing. We shall begin learning about the parts of speech: nouns, verbs and adjectives. Spelling- We shall begin learning our spelling words. We have worked on "the, of, a, and, is, that, was, he, she, on , have, are, as, they, from, with and I." We shall work on the short i and use our spelling books this quarter.
In math we shall cover quantification, patterning, and graphing. We shall work on addition and subtraction skills and memorization of math facts to the sum of 10. The students will begin to memorize the basic addition and subtraction facts. Fact families and turn around facts will be introduced. A number of ways such as Montessori materials, number lines, dice, and computer software will be utilized to help demonstrate these concepts. The students will move from the concrete level with the goal to transfer what they have learned into the ability to do more abstract computation. We have been learning a variety of ways to solve mathematical problems. Several examples of strategies we have been using include looking for patterns, logical reasoning and developing a table or graph.
The students shall be learning how to write their own addition and subtraction story problems. We shall work on fact families and number families. The students have been using Montessori math materials to work on four digit addition and subtraction problems. Tangrams are being used to problem solve math patterns and also we created a book on tangrams. We shall learn about place value (ones, tens, hundreds). The Montessori materials are being utilized to demonstrate place value. The students love the golden beads and the stamp game. Problem solving skills are introduced during mathematical operations as well as with place value. We shall begin learning the clock with the hour and the half hour. Money is introduced in the third quarter. The coins we shall use are the penny, nickel, dime and the quarter. The students shall work with adding different combinations of these coins together. The fourth quarter will be spent on measurement, geometric shapes, and two digit addition and subtraction. The emphasis on measurement will be by using centimeters, inches, feet and non standard units. Liquid measurement shall be introduced using the pint, liter, and gallon. The five strands of teaching mathematics are emphasized through our "PROBLEM OF THE DAY" and our "UNIT BOOKS." The strands include number sense, measurement, geometry, data analysis and algebra. We have adopted a new math program with many opportunities for advanced learning. One key component will allow the students to access mathematic games online at home. The text allows for assessment of each student. Our math book has an excellent website, www.sfsuccessnet.com. The children have passwords and can complete assignments on line.
This month we celebrate what good readers we have become by sharing "story bags" with the class. This is such a fun project. The children enjoy reading their favorite story and bringing in items to go along with the story. The children will begin this in the month of May.

Student of the Week: Each student will be asked to be a "star student" during the school year. A poster is sent home with your child the week before it is your child's turn to be the "star student." Please have your child complete this poster, and return it on the following Monday. Birthdays: If your child has a birthday during the school year, he/ she may bring in treats for his/her birthday. If your child has a summer birthday, he/ she may bring in treats on his/ her half birthday or during the last week of school.
