7. Prepare the following essay questions.

a) According to J.A. Bryan, Jr., Juliet is the most heroic character. During the course of the play, she is transformed from “an adolescent arrogantly eager to outdo her elders to an appealing child-woman, barely fourteen, who learns to mix courage with her innocence.” Simply put, she develops from a child into a woman. In your essay you must show how Juliet makes this transformation by first showing her as a child, then showing her in conflict between the two worlds, then as a mature woman. Find quotes that support each of these points. You might consider these ideas:

            She makes important decisions.

She is in conflict with her parents.

            She faces violence and loss

She has adult experiences thrust upon her with little warning or preparation

            She exhibits courage

            She faces internal conflicts

She learns the value of loyalty and friendship

She learns something about the adult world

b) According to Paul Pickerel, Great Expectations is a story of Pip’s moral education that comes about as a result of his relationship with Estella, Magwitch, and Joe Gargery. Much of this has to do with his pride. Pip initially allows his pride to ruin his relationships with people who love him. Eventually, however his pride is altered, and this allows for him to develop meaningful relationships. Although  Pip’s arrogant pride leads to disasters, his pride tempered with humility fosters success and fulfillment.

Story Project due February 16

Stories:

Dandelion Wine and My Antonia make us think about our past and all the stories that we need to preserve. In order to preserve some of our stories, we will embark on our own “Time Machine” project. If you would like to listen to stories, go to www.npr.org and click on Storycorps. There you will find numerous stories that people all over the country are recording for posterity. Here is the assignment:

1. Find someone that represents each of four different generations. Keep in mind that a generation can be defined as someone who is 20-25 years beyond in age. For example, if you are 15, someone 35-40 might be considered a generation before you; someone 55-60 might be two generations before you; someone 65-70 might be three generations before you. Therefore, your parents are one generation removed, grandparents two generations removed, great grandparents three generations removed. The person(s) you choose should be family members on either side of the family. If that is impossible, choose close friends.

2. Ask the following questions of each generation:

A. What story did your parents tell you that made the greatest impression?

B. What story do you remember that your grandparents told you?

C. What story can you retell about your experiences in school?

D. What story can you relate about a character” in the family or the neighborhood?

E. What story can you tell about a new invention in your lifetime?

F. Can you tell me a story about a time you were afraid?

G. Can you tell me about your first love? First  kiss? How you met your mate?

H. What is your favorite “special occasion” story? A birthday? Christmas? Vacation?

I. What are you favorite family memories?

3. Tell your own stories in each of these categories.

4. Record these stories. You may take notes while the person is talking; or you may video the person; or you may use a tape recorder (or similar device). You will have about 36 stories.

4. Make certain that you ask about the specific dates (at least the year) and any particular names of places or people.

5. Rewrite ten of these stories from the point of view of the particular speaker. Of course, you may include more. You may then type these stories to put into a folder. You may include any pictures.

6. Choose two of these stories to illustrate in “story book form.”

Your completed project is due on February 16. If you finish earlier, this would make a good Valentine gift for your family.  I will ask for various stories in the days preceding.

Exam Preparation:

1. Study and memorize the literary terms. This should be your first priority.

2. Organize your literature notes. Study the highlighted sections for each story.
