The following is a sample introduction for the paper about the characterization of Buddy's cousin:
In his touching story, "A Christmas Memory," Truman Capote paints a poignant picture of an elderly woman and her relationship with her much younger cousin. Capote creates a character whose endearing qualities become lessons for the much younger relative who is also her best friend. Although she is "sixty something," Buddy's cousin is as innocent and naive as a child. This childlikeness allows her to share her unbridled enthusiasm about activities that many adults no longer cherish. Although she is naive, she is also quite resourceful. With very little money she can provide a memorable Christmas that she and Buddy enjoy. This ingenuousness is evident as well in her expressions of kindness and love. She teaches Buddy that all people, even strangers, deserve to respect and kindness. Through the first person narration of Buddy, Capote delights the reader with this memorable character who is ingenuous, resourceful, and kind. |
