Reading

This quarter we are doing an author study on Tomie dePaola, a much beloved children's author and illustrator.   Since the children are becoming independent readers, we will focus on the comprehension skills that accompany our reading.  Some of those skills are:

  •     Parts of Speech
  •     Punctuation
  •     Contractions
  •     Antonyms
  •     Rhyming Words

Phonics

  •     Long and short vowels
  •     Rhyming words
  •     Syllabication
  •     Hard and soft "c" and "g"
  •     "R", "L" and "S" blends
  •     Vowel sounds of "Y"
  •     Consonant Digraphs: sh, th, wh, ch, ck, kn, wr
  •     Words ending in "le"

Writing

We are working on writing good sentences.  A sentence should tell a complete thought, start with a capital letter, and end with the proper punctuation.

Spelling

The students are responsible for knowing the 1st grade spelling words, in addition to the 2nd grade spelling words, as they are introduced.  A list of the 1st grade spelling words was sent home at Open House.  The new spelling words for the 1st quarter are:
