Junior accepted into leadership program

Fulfilling a personal goal, Michael Overbeck ‘22 will attend a leadership training program this summer with HOBY, the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Institute.

Michael was nominated by his teachers during his sophomore year but was unable to attend because of COVID. After he transferred to The Summit in January 2021, he continued to pursue the opportunity. “It was my first priority,” Michael says.

At HOBY, high schoolers explore their leadership potential through an inspiring and engaging curriculum. This highly interactive program allows students to explore leadership from a personal, group and socially responsible perspective.

“I’m very interested in learning how to be a better leader,” he shares. “Another objective is to meet people outside of Cincinnati and understand their experience with leadership and how it might be different than mine.”

After his training, Michael will be challenged to complete 100 hours of community service within the next year to put his passion and newly built leadership skills into action. He is already speaking with school administrators about ways to inspire other Upper School students to consider the program.

“I hope to return in the fall with a better understanding of myself and my leadership strengths,” Michael says. “I want to connect better with others and learn to be a leader that others want to follow.”
