Summit team secures second place in 2024 Power of the Pen state tournament

Power of the Pen helps students in grades seven and eight learn lasting writing skills and develop their own unique, creative voice through participating in writing tournaments. Ashland University hosted the 2024 State Tournament on May 16-17.

12 Middle School writers joined language arts teacher Brendan McEachern in Ashland after a send-off spirit tunnel at Summit. Kiersten Diaz '28 and Ben Hofmann '28 were in a room at Ashland University with the top 500 writers in the state. The season began with over 2500 writers back in the fall.

Ben made it to the final round of 50 writers and placed eighth in the entire state for eighth grade. Or as Ben said, "I was the number one boy writer!"

At the end of the tournament, writer points were tallied from the Southwest District 1 competition, the Southwest Regional Tournament and Summit's two writers at state. Our combined seventh and eighth grade team took second place for excellence in writing in the state for total points.

"We have never had a team award at the state level," says Mr. McEachern. "This is a full-team award and showed how well all of the writers did in total points throughout the season."

Mr. McEachern invites all to come by to see their second place plaque in his Power of the Pen wall of fame.
