Summit held its annual Spelling Bee on January 23 in St. Cecilia Hall featuring 155 words and 25 spellers from grades 4-8. By round 12, the competition was down to the final five; final three by round 13. In round 19, Chelsea Beyerbach '31 impressively spelled chlorofluorocarbon correctly. Leading into the 20th round of spelling, she narrowly misspelled bayou, finishing as a strong runner-up to Liam Roberts '31.
Liam spelled the following words correctly to become the school champion: biology, ballerina, rampage, committee, feisty, parroting, leeward, respiratory, ruffian, keening, pentameter, imperator, Canterbury, Madagascar, fuselage, lieutenant, Byzantine, catechism, Chernobyl and mosque. The next steps for Liam include an online qualifying test followed by participation in the WCPO regional spelling bee. If he wins that bee, he will travel to Washington, D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee!
