Summit field hockey wins in overtime thriller

Prior to Tuesday’s game, Summit varsity field hockey coach Emily Betz wasn’t aware of a time the Silver Knights had defeated St. Ursula in a match.

After the game, she no longer has to search her memory or archives to find a victory as Summit survived two sudden death overtime periods and two rounds of penalty strokes to win, 3-2. Junior midfielder Mia Booth scored the game-winning stroke.

After playing to a scoreless tie in regulation and the first overtime, the second sudden death overtime started with seven players playing for each team.

“Everyone plays offense, everyone plays defense,” Coach Betz said. “We hardly subbed at all in overtime. It took a lot of effort from those girls. It was such a high-pressure situation.”

Handling that pressure was freshman goalie Glady Hill. She anchored a defensive group that kept the game scoreless in regulation and overtime.

“She was outstanding and played with so much poise,” the coach said. “It was unbelievable. I was so impressed with her.”

Betz credited her team captains and seniors Kathleen Corrado, Cate Pilon, Essa Britt, Kendall Richard and Abby Moore for their leadership during the game.

The Silver Knights turn their focus to their next game against No. 1 seeded Mount Notre Dame. That game will be on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at MND. The start time has not been announced.

“We are going to focus on the fundamentals that got us here, our communication, passing patterns and finishes on the cage,” the coach said.
