Summit senior signs to study, golf at Ashland University

One senior at The Summit Country Day School was recognized for advancing her academic and athletic career to the collegiate level on Feb. 2 during a ceremony in St. Cecilia Hall. Senior Erin Johnson, Anderson Township, will study and play golf at Ashland University.

Throughout her career, Erin has improved significantly, working her way to becoming one of the best golfers in the region.

In her freshman and sophomore seasons, she was a district qualifier. In her junior season, she advanced to the district tournament after finishing in a three-way tie for second place after carding an 88 at sectionals.

Ms. Johnson saved her best for last. In the regular season, she recorded the lowest stroke average per round (40) in the Miami Valley Conference. She fired an 81 in the MVC tournament, securing her spot as Golfer of the Year and a spot on the all-conference first team.

In the postseason, she repeated as sectional runner-up, scoring an 87 on her round. At the district tournament, she fired a 78, narrowly missing qualification for the Division II state tournament.

She was named player of the year by the Southwest Ohio High School Girls’ Golf Coaches Association. The Enquirer also made her a first-team all-star in Division II.

As part of a community project with First Tee, an organization that enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime, she raised the funds to purchase 25 sets of clubs and bags that are designated to area high schools. The project goal was to purchase 10 sets of clubs and bags.

“She is a credit to her family and our community,” Summit girls’ golf coach Cathy Flesch said.

Erin is also a member of The Summit girls’ bowling team which just won the MVC earlier this week after beating Clark Montessori.
