Summit students earn awards for art and writing

Several Summit students were awarded top recognition in the Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition, including a junior who came away with three Gold Keys, the highest honor, for his artwork. Altogether, 19 Summit students won 29 awards.

Upper School artist Justinian Su ‘23 was awarded Gold Key recognition for three submissions, a photo and two pieces of jewelry. His favorite submission was “Wakening of Civilization,” a landscape shot taken in the early morning. “It has good composition and color,” Justinian says. “The lighting shows off the warm and cool colors of the scene.” Justinian also received two Silver keys and two Honorable Mention awards, bringing his total to seven awards.

Tony Zhang ‘22 also received a Gold Key for his artwork titled “Sketch of Time,” a piece inspired while he was learning to write left-handed. “It’s a series of several sheets of notebook paper arranged on a black background. Each sheet has the alphabet with a date stamp so you can see the progression.”

In the writing category, Angela Good ‘23 earned her Gold Key for a submission entitled “The Silence" in the science fiction and fantasy genre. She was also nominated for the American Voices Medal. This is the highest honor that is given to only one writer from each region.

“The story is about the relationship between a human village and an entity,” Angela explains. She got inspiration from reading “a lot” about dystopian societies and then tapped into her own imagination for the piece.

Gold Key recipients advance to compete for national medals in an exhibition that culminates with the National Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. National medalists are eligible for scholarship awards of up to $10,000.

“We’re incredibly proud of our writing and art programs that inspire students to think creatively,” says Rich Wilson, Head of School. “These award winners demonstrate what can be achieved when students dedicate themselves to pursuing rigor and challenge at The Summit.”

The annual Scholastic competition is the nation's most prestigious recognition initiative for creative students in grades 7-12 and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers in the nation. This region of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is administered by the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Congratulations to all our award winners and to the teachers who inspire them to excellence.
