Experience: 14 years in education prior to The Summit. At The Summit, I have taught Middle School Mathematics, Grade 8 Honors Geometry, Grade 8 Algebra I and Grade 7 Pre-Algebra and served as the coordinator of the Middle School Mathematics Curriculum and National Junior Honor Society Advisor.
Inspiration: My mother taught high school math and my aunt was an elementary teacher and principal. Both of them taught me, by example, the importance of having teachers who are committed to their students and passionate about their subject matter.
The Summit's superior academic reputation was the initial draw for me. When I first saw our beautiful chapel and met some of the faculty and staff members, I felt an overwhelming sense that I was called to be here. I can say that The Summit community has fulfilled its promises in ways I never imagined and become family. I am blessed to be here.
Philosophy: I believe that the best learning occurs in an environment that encourages students to wrestle with new concepts and to ask questions. Students who feel as though their questions will be addressed become more willing to ask questions and become more confident in their own ability to learn math. I believe that math books need to come with math teachers and that it is part of my role to translate the language of the textbook into language and demonstrations for students to grasp more easily.
Personal: Husband, Douglas Varick.
